HSBC Global Private Banking (GBP) has made two new desk head appointments for southeast Asia, Urban Binggeli and Benjamin Wang, adding to other senior appointments late last year.
“This bolstered team will play a critical role in delivering innovative solutions and meeting the evolving needs of our UHNW and HNW clients across the region,” said Tommy Leung, head of GPB, South Asia, HSBC, in a media release
Binggeli has been hired as GBP desk head for Indonesia, effective immediately. He has over 15 years of experience in wealth management and ultra high net worth (UHNW) client advisory.
As a market team head at UBS and Credit Suisse, he spearheaded “transformative growth in the Indonesian market, successfully delivering bespoke investment solutions and fostering cross-regional collaboration between Apac and Europe”, according to the statement by HSBC GBP.
In his new role, Binggeli will lead HSBC’s strategic efforts to strengthen relationships with UHNW clients and family Offices, driving growth in the Indonesian market.
He reports to Hammad Hashmi, market head for Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia at HSBC GPB. Hashmi was made market head, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, effective 11 November 2024. In this role, he leads and manages the desk heads and relationship managers covering Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the development of the $2-10 million segment.
Hashmi has over 25 years of experience in financial services and wealth management, joining HSBC in 2007 and has covered various markets, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, in roles such as Indonesia senior desk head and Malaysia desk head. Prior to HSBC, he worked with Deutsche Bank in Pakistan and Singapore.
The second new appointment is Benjamin Wang, who will be GPB desk head for Thailand, effective 18 January 2025. With over two decades of experience in private banking and wealth management, he has been serving as interim desk head for Thailand since July 2024.
In his role, Wang will lead the Thailand offshore and onshore teams based in Singapore and Bangkok, focusing on driving performance and client coverage strategies.
“His leadership will be pivotal as HSBC GBP continues to grow its presence in Thailand, a key market with significant opportunities,” said the statement.
Based in Singapore, Wang will report to Hashmi, market head Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, on an entity basis and Abhishek Mehrotra.
Mehrotra took up the position of market head, South East Asia International (SEA International) on 11 November 2024. He leads and manages the desk heads and relationship managers covering the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, and Australia, as well as the development of the UHNW client segment.
Mehrotra has over 20 years of banking experience, with the last 14 years in private banking. He has held senior roles, including UHNW desk head and senior desk head for the Philippines, Japan, Global India, and MENA teams based in Hong Kong. Mehrotra has been with HSBC since 2004, working across commercial banking and private banking in India, the Philippines, and Hong Kong.
Finally, Annie Lim was hired as GPB desk head for Singapore, effective 2 December 2024. She joined HSBC from Lombard Odier, and has over 29 years of experience in wealth management and client advisory, including serving UHNW clients and family offices.
Lim’s career includes senior roles at Credit Suisse, Standard Chartered, and American Express Bank. In her role, she will focus on deepening relationships with UHNW clients and family offices.
