An investor’s view on the direction of the market will have a strong impact in deciding between the two funds.
“The Investec fund would likely outperform the MFS fund in a rising market environment driven by momentum,” Hinton said.
The MFS fund has more defensive attributes and would likely perform better in difficult market environments. “MFS has managed to build up a strong long-term record by losing less than most managers in down markets [while offering] reasonable upside capture,” he added.
“We regard both strategies highly, although they could [also] be included in portfolios for different reasons.”
