Liu joined the four-member team from Citigroup and is responsible for the research, analysis and management of Hong Kong dollar and renminbi fixed income securities portfolios, the firm said.
Liu replaces Ronald Chan, who now takes on the role of head of North Asia investments. Chan will drive the firm’s growth in North Asia, a spokesperson said.
Liu joined the company on 13 April and reports to Paula Chan, senior portfolio manager in charge of the Hong Kong-based fixed income investment team.
“We believe the HKD and RMB bond markets hold the potential to generate attractive returns via careful investment selection based on in-depth credit research,” Chan said.
“Mainland China’s RMB fixed income market continues to show rapid growth and the country’s capital account is in the process of opening to increased foreign investment,” Chan added.
Liu has previously worked with Harvest Global Investment and Standard Chartered Bank.
In January, Manulife promoted Endre Pedersen, senior managing director, Asian fixed income to the role of chief investment officer, fixed income, Asia (ex-Japan).
