Sun Life Investment Management has appointed Olivier Szwarcberg as Hong Kong-based Asia head of research. He replaces Tieu-Bich Nguyen, who had been in the role since February 2018. Szwarcberg will be responsible for leading the firm’s credit research function. He will focus on credit cycle positioning for Sun Life to protect the firm’s assets while maximising investment income. Before Sun Life IM, Szwarcberg was at Fidelity International, where he was head of Asia fixed income for four years. …

Global alternative investment firm Värde Partners has appointed Elena Lieskovska and Haseeb Malik to partners and promoted Brad Bauer to deputy chief investment officer. London-based Lieskovska is the firm’s London-based head of European financial services, while Malik is head of Asia corporate and traded credit, based in Singapore. In addition to his new role as deputy CIO, Bauer is a partner and global head of private debt, transportation and energy…

Fund managers in Singapore expect that absolute return, ESG, multi-asset and private market funds to be the most popular strategies this year, according to a survey conducted by The Investment Management Association of Singapore (IMAS). Hedge funds globally saw net outflows of $35.28bn in 2018, according to an Evestment report. It was the second worst year since 2009, just behind the $111.6bn of outflows in 2016. However, despite the outflows, 42% of reporting managers were able to see net inflows, the report said, noting that these funds outperformed the industry by at least 400 basis points on the average…

Bank of Singapore has alerted its clients and members of the public that it has found a fraudulent mobile application. The applications have no connection with Bank of Singapore and the bank has reported the matter to relevant regulators and the police…
