The Jupiter fund receives a five-star Morningstar rating and an analyst rating of Neutral. The Syz product receives two stars and it does not yet have an analyst rating.
Morningstar’s star rating looks at historical-adjusted performance and the analyst rating is based on forward-looking analysis.
McDermott prefers the Jupiter fund to the Syz product.
“On paper, the choice seems obvious,” he said, given the Jupiter fund’s outperformance.
However, McDermott noted that he will be monitoring the Jupiter fund now that the management is changing.
Darwall, who is exiting, was somewhat of a “star manager”, well-known by investors who had a high degree of confidence in his investment decisions.
“While we like Nichols very much, the fund is a lot bigger than those he has previously managed and we will want to see how he settles in and monitor the fund for any outflows,” he said.
“It is very difficult to manage any fund well if it is in redemption,” he added.
Turning to the Syz fund, although the fund has underperformed, McDermott is “very impressed” with the fund managers’ ideas about companies that are potential turnaround stories.
Investors who prefer a value investing approach and believe in buying low-priced, out-of-favour companies that are likely to rebound should consider the Syz product an attractive investment option.
