As fund research firm Morningstar emphasises in individual fund reports, it is critical to evaluate expenses, as they come directly out of returns.
The JP Morgan fund’s ongoing charges figure (OCF) of 1.69% ranks in the Morningstar middle quintile for the Asia Pacific ex-Japan category, which is “not great”, according to Morningstar, which nevertheless believes that the share class should still be able to deliver positive alpha relative to the benchmark index, justifying its analyst rating of bronze.
The Matthews product has a higher OCF of 1.83%, which is also in Morningstar’s middle quintile, and the fund research firm considers the managers capable of delivering sufficient alpha to warrant an analyst rating of silver.
