“The Barings fund is a tried-and-tested performer in all types of markets, backed by an excellent team of managers and analysts, making it a safe pair of hands for investors,” said McDermott.
The product has a four-star rating from Morningstar, whose criteria is based on historical risk-adjusted returns.
FE Fundinfo, which bases its assessment on a fund’s three-year history of delivering alpha, minimising relative volatility and producing consistent returns, awards the fund two crowns.
The First State fund has a short-track record, having been incepted in December 2017 an only made available to retail investors in Singapore this year.
“However, those looking for something a little different may like the First State fund,” said McDermott.
“Not only does the firm have a suite of successful funds in the emerging markets space, but this particular fund also has a strong ESG theme running through the portfolio,” he said.
For example, it has minimal exposure to sectors such as oil & gas and miners.
“We also like First State’s high conviction style of investing, which has been proven to succeed across a number of their vehicles dedicated to emerging markets,” McDermott concluded.
