FE gives the Nordea fund a four-crown rating and five crowns for the Templeton fund, indicating that the latter posted better risk-adjusted performance in terms of alpha, volatility and consistency over the last three years.
“The Templeton fund is preferred as it has a big team to source local knowledge. Its approach to avoid cyclical sectors also leads to lower volatility and better downside protection.”
The Nordea fund, meanwhile, “could outperform when the markets are more growth biased and sentiment driven”, Ng added, while the Templeton fund might show a slight performance lag.
Morningstar did not rate the Nordea fund. However, it gives the Templeton fund a (forward-looking) analyst rating of Bronze and a five-star (historical) rating.
But the high-risk nature of small-cap funds should only be used to diversify a broad portfolio, not as a core holding, Morningstar noted.
