The Nordea fund has been managed by David Shea from Copper Rock Capital Partners since the launch in 2003.
Copper Rock, set up in 2005 and based in Boston, has $5.5bn assets under management as of March-end, according to its website.
It has 10 memebers in the investment team, including four portfolio managers, four analysts and two traders.
Shea, also a partner of the firm, joined in 2008 and is responsible for research, stock selection and portfolio construction. He is also the manager of the Copper Rock International Small Cap Portfolio. He has 25 years of experience, and previously worked at Putnam Investments as a portfolio manager on the global growth equity team, and also as director in the quantitative research group at Citigroup Asset Management.
Franklin Templeton Investments, by comparison, has an investment team of 50 people.
“The Templeton fund has a very well-resourced team, with 20 offices globally, which has the on-the-ground advantage of gaining local knowledge,” Ng said.
A notable change in Templeton is the stepping down of Mark Mobius as the fund manager of 12 funds in March, including this emerging markets small fund product.
Despite Mobius’ exit from the funds, both Ng and Morningstar do not see material impact to the product.
“The newly-named manager, Chetan Sehgal, an Indian, has been leading the strategy since the fund launch. He is also supported by two senior members of the team, Vikas Chiranewal and Erman Kalkandelen. The portfolio has not changed since the removal of Mobius’ name,” Ng explained.
Sehgal was appointed as the lead manager in April and is based in Singapore. Prior to joining Franklin Templeton, he was a senior ratings analyst for the Credit Rating Information Services of India.
“We think that Templeton Emerging Markets Group is heading in the right direction and investors should not be concerned about the announced portfolio management appointments,” according to Germaine Share, Morningstar senior manager research analyst, as reported earlier.
