HEAD-TO-HEAD: JGF-Jupiter versus Pictet

“We are particularly strong fans of the Pictet fund and its performance has been superior,” said McDermott.

“The most significant feature of this fund, that makes it stand out from other environmental thematic products, is its application of the ‘planetary boundaries’ framework’”, he said.

“Portfolio construction is built into the process when assessing every stock, which ensures the final portfolio of around 50 holdings is well diversified,” according to McDermott.

Pictet believes the environmental market is approximately $2trn in size and is growing at 6% to 7% per annum, and the managers are absolutely committed to their theme, he explained.

“We like the fact that the managers specifically target companies where a minimum 20% of their activities are actively solving environmental challenges, although in practice the aggregate focus across the portfolio is closer to 65%,” said McDermott.
