HEAD-TO-HEAD: BNY Mellon vs Deutsche

FSA compares two global equity income funds: the BNY Mellon Global Equity Income Fund and the Deutsche Invest Top Dividend Fund.

Manager review

The BNY Mellon fund is managed by lead manager Nick Clay and co-manager Ian Clark. They are solely dedicated to the fund. Clay has been managing the fund since 2012. Before that, he was the lead manager on various global multi-asset mandates from 2000 to 2012 at BNY Mellon.

Clark worked as the dedicated analyst for the fund for five years before becoming co-portfolio manager in 2017.

They both tap into the global equity research capabilities of the firm. Both managers are based in London.

The Deutsche fund is managed by Frankfurt-based Thomas Schuessler, who is also the firm’s head of equity income and a member of the asset management CIO executive committee in Frankfurt. He has been managing the fund since 2005 and first joined the firm in 1996.

The fund’s deputy portfolio manager is Stephen Werner, who is also the portfolio manager for other equity income funds in Frankfurt. He has been the deputy manager to the fund since 2015.

Both managers are supported by the global value team.

Durmaz and Hinton do not have any concerns over management. They believe that both managers have good track records and are also able to utilise the wider resources offered by their respective firms.
