FE Fundinfo has given the Axa fund a three-crown rating and the T Rowe offering receives two crowns.
The crown-rating methodology assesses the fund’s alpha, volatility and consistency of performance.
Both products are highly rated by Morningstar, with both of them having a four-star rating and an analyst rating of Bronze.
Morningstar’s star rating looks at historically-adjusted performance and the analyst rating is based on forward-looking analysis.
McDermott prefers the Axa fund over the T Rowe offering, given the longer-term track record and experience of its fund manager and the consistency of the product.
“We like the experience that Gleeson brings to the table and he has consistently proved that his methods work.
“The manager takes advantage of the lack of benchmark constraints, allowing him to invest in a range of companies, not just traditional tech companies, but seeking out those where technology provides a significant competitive advantage.”
That said, he noted that the T Rowe fund is still a good offering for investors.
“Although the T Rowe Price fund is a relative newcomer compared with the Axa fund, it has held its own and made consistent returns.
T Rowe also has a large resource of analysts globally, with a local presence in a great number of markets, allowing them to pick up on new technologies as they arise,” he added.
