There were several changes at the Abrdn fund late in 2020, which was part of a wider restructuring at the firm, according to Liu.
The number of key managers of the fund was reduced to three from nine, which Liu believes “was a positive move, because it means that mangers are more accountable”.
Martin Connaghan remains the leader of the team. He is very experienced and joined Abrdn in 2001. Connaghan is supported by Samantha Fitzpatrick and Ella-Kara Brown, and despite the downsizing, all three managers are backed by 140 analysts worldwide who cover around 2,000 stocks, said Liu.
The manager of the Alquity product is a former Abrdn global head of quantitative analytics. Marni Uy has tow decades of investment experience and when she was at Abrdn she managed $100bn in AUM.
At Alquity, which she joined in 2019, Uy leads all quantitative strategies and risk management, and “has been responsible for improving the performance of several funds,” said Liu.
Uy is joined by Keith Gyles who has provided the macro input since he moved to Alquity three months ago, and by Cyntia Cano, who is the head ESG data science at the firm.
“All three individuals are important to the running of the strategy,” said Liu.
