HEAD-TO-HEAD: Aberdeen vs Matthews Asia
FSA compares the Aberdeen Global Indian Equity Fund and the Matthews Asia India Fund.
Manager Review
The Aberdeen fund is managed by the firm’s Asian equities team, based in Singapore and led by Flavia Cheong. As is Aberdeen’s practice, the team is composed mostly of long-term staff who were hired in junior roles upon graduation and trained in the firm’s methods, according to Ng. The team has low turnover on the senior level, he added. Around four staff members are dedicated to the Indian Equity fund, with Cheong making investment decisions.
Matthews Asia is a boutique asset manager. The management team is smaller, consisting of the lead manager Sunil Asnani, and two co-managers, Sharat Shroff and Peeyush Mittal. Asnani and Shroff have managed the fund since its inception.
While the Aberdeen team does most of its research in house, the Matthews Asia team also relies on sell-side research, Ng said.
