HEAD-TO-HEAD: First State vs JP Morgan
FSA compares the First State Global Resources Fund and the JP Morgan Global Natural Resources Fund.
Of the two funds, the First State team is larger and has more accumulated investment experience.
First State’s Joanne Warner has been with the management team since 1997 and has led it since 2007. She is supported by two portfolio managers, Tal Lomnitzer and Todd Warren, with 35 combined years of experience. She is also supported by several analysts.
Gregson took over management of the JP Morgan fund in February 2012 after the previous manager retired. He joined JP Morgan in 2010, after heading emerging markets at Credit Suisse AM and the long-only business focused on natural resources at CQS AM. Gregson is supported by two analysts.
The managers of both funds came into their careers from the natural resources industry. In addition, Warner has a PhD in solid state chemistry from the University of Oxford, while Gregson is a qualified mining engineer.
“When you run those funds, having an industry background is a plus,” said Khizou.
