Franklin Templeton has appointed Nicholas Chui as senior vice president and portfolio manager in the China investment team.

Based in Hong Kong, he will be in charge of managing the firm’s China equity strategies.

“We are delighted to welcome such a high-calibre China equity portfolio manager to Franklin Templeton Emerging Markets Equity,” said Manraj Sekhon, chief investment officer at Templeton Global Equity Investments.

“We have continued to invest in and strengthen our China investment team over recent years and [Chui]’s appointment demonstrates our ongoing commitment to ensuring we have deep capabilities and can deliver investment excellence for our clients in China equity, both offshore and onshore.”

Chui reports to Sukumar Rajah, senior managing director and director of portfolio management for Franklin Templeton Emerging Markets Equity.

Chui departed from Blackrock in January this year, where he was the co-fund manager of four funds, as reported by FSA earlier.

Prior to Blackrock, he was the deputy head of abrdn’s Hong Kong/China equity team and lead manager of its China A-shares equity strategy.

Chui takes over from Michael Lai, portfolio manager at Franklin Templeton Emerging Markets Equity, who will be retiring from the company.

“I would also like to thank Lai for his contribution to our China strategy over the past four years. [Lai] has had a highly distinguished investment career spanning over three decades and played an important role in developing our China capabilities since he joined Franklin Templeton,” Sekhon added.
