Manager review
Both Richard Buxton at Merian and Alex Breese at Schroders are highly experienced and well-regarded fund managers, according to McDermott.
Buxton joined Merian as head of UK equities in 2013 and has managed the firm’s UK Alpha Fund since its inception in the same year.
“He is supported by co-managers Errol Francis and Ed Meier, who ran the Schroder ISF UK equity fund before Alex Breese,” said McDermott.
In early 2019, Buxton announced he would step down from the CEO role (which he took on in 2015) and will remain with the business as head of UK equities.
He began his career in 1985 at Brown Shipley Asset Management, and subsequently worked for Barings and Schroders before joining Old Mutual – which became Old Mutual following the merger with Jupiter.
Buxton was awarded the “Outstanding Contribution to the Industry” honour at the Morningstar OBSR Awards in 2012.
Meanwhile, Breese joined Schroders in the same year as Buxton moved to Old Mutual/Merian, and took over the running of the ISF UK Equity in July 2013.
“He was a rising star who had joined Neptune in May 2005 as an investment analyst, later becoming manager of Neptune UK Special Situations fund and head of UK equities,” said McDermott.
“Prior to joining Neptune, Breese gained nearly three years’ experience as an engineering consultant,” he said.
