Manager review
“Charlie Thomas joined Jupiter in 2000 and is currently head of environment and sustainability strategy, running a raft of vehicles focused on the area for the firm,” said McDermott.
He has managed the Global Ecology Growth Fund since its launch in 2008, has been the lead manager of the Jupiter Green Investment Trust since September 2003 and also runs the firm’s Climate Change Solutions Sicav as well as several segregated accounts for institutional clients.
Before joining Jupiter, “Thomas spent three years working for BP, first as an environmental policy adviser where he helped develop climate change strategies and sustainable energy policies for the group, and later as a commercial analyst working on new business development”, according to McDermott.
He has also worked for the United Nations environment programme as well as other financial institutions, and he has an MSc in environmental technology from Imperial College in London.
The much larger Pictet Global Environmental Fund has three managers. Luciano Diana and Gabriel Micheli have been at the helm since 2014, with Yi Du joining them in 2018.
Diana joined the Swiss asset manager in 2009, and he is head of environmental thematic investing and a senior investment manager on the sector and theme funds team, according to McDermott.
“Previously, he headed the London-based clean energy sell-side research team at Morgan Stanley for four years, having started his career at Accenture as an IT strategy consultant,” he said.
Micheli is an investment manager on the sector and theme funds team and he has been with the firm since 2006. He also manages the $385m Pictet Timber Fund.
Du is the most recent arrival, joining from JP Morgan where he was an associate in the global equity research department.
