Manager review
McDermott has a lot of respect for the management teams of both funds, noting their experience and proven expertise.
As lead manager of the Allianz fund, “Anthony Wong has two decades of investment experience and solid performance,” said McDermott.
Before joining Allianz in 2012, he worked as a director and portfolio manager at Bank Julius Baer where he was responsible for managing the Julius Baer China Fund.
The other manager of the fund is Sunny Chung, who joined Allianz in Taiwan in 2006, before moving to Hong Kong in 2015. He has 22 years of experience in investment-related roles and was the portfolio manager of the Allianz Taiwan Equity fund for eight years. He is now a senior portfolio manager and co-lead manager of the China A-Shares strategy.
The Invesco China Fund lead-manager Mike Shiao joined the firm in 2002, and McDermott noted that “he has been the lead manager of the Greater China equity portfolios since 2008 and became the lead manager of the Asia opportunities equity portfolios in July 2014”.
In April 2015, he became chief investment officer, Greater China, with overall charge of Invesco’s team of Greater China portfolio managers and analysts.
Shiao’s colleague managing the China fund is Lorraine Kuo, who has an alpha manager rating from FE Fundinfo.
She joined Invesco in September 2011 as a fund manager and was later promoted to associate director.
Kuo has been promoted rapidly and is “now the co-manager for Greater China and China equity portfolios, as well as responsible for stock research and analysis of the internet, software, and media industries,” said McDermott.
