HEAD-TO-HEAD: Blackrock vs Alliance Bernstein

Fund Selector Asia compares the Blackrock GF Global High Yield Bond Fund with the Alliance Bernstein Global High Yield Fund.

Commenting on the AB fund, Ng noted that the fund manager, Peebles, is well-regarded for his tactical calls.

The AB fund has a strong reputation because of its consistent performance, Ng said.

“Peebles managed to bring huge amounts of capital into the fund from the Hong Kong market based on his track record.”

Fee review

Ng said that the Blackrock fund is priced more competitively, with a total expense ratio of 1.46%. The AB fund is slightly more expensive, with a total expense ratio of 1.83%.

Both of the funds have maintained their fees in line with expectations and that the AB fund’s slight premium would not be a concern with investors, he said.

Conclusion

Ng said the Blackrock fund is suitable for investors who believe in the US growth story and for those who are looking for exposure to the developed market high yield segment.

For investors looking for regional diversification, Ng noted that the AB fund would be a good choice as it covers both emerging and developed markets.

Ng said that in the short-term, he would choose the BlackRock fund.

“The developed market currently holds a stronger proposition for me.”
