HEAD-TO-HEAD: Ashmore vs Templeton

FSA compares two global emerging market bond funds: the Ashmore Sicav Emerging Markets Total Return Fund and the Templeton Emerging Markets Bond Fund.

Although the Ashmore team responsible for the fund is based in London, the firm has on-the-ground offices in Brazil, India, Turkey, Russia and Colombia, which provides insight on local market dynamics.

Broussard said that Ashmore manages funds using a team-based investment process. The firm’s fixed income investment committee is ultimately responsible for all strategies, and includes Mark Coombs, chairman of the committee; Herbert Saller, head of external debt; Ricardo Xavier, head of local currency; Fernando Assad, head of multi asset; Robin Forrest, head of corporate debt; and Jan Dehn, head of research.

Together, they oversee a team of 76 investment professionals dedicated to emerging markets debt, including 22 portfolio managers based in London.

The Templeton fund is managed by the firm’s San Mateo- and Singapore-based global macro team, which headed by Michael Hasenstab.

The lead managers for the fund are Hasenstab and Laura Burakreis. Hasenstab has been managing the fund since 2002, while Burakreis became co-manager in 2010.

Although Ashmore has a larger dedicated team for its fund than Templeton, both funds are managed by very experienced managers and analysts with access to vast resources, according to Broussard.

She does not consider management to be an issue for investors.
