The Fidelity fund’s FE rating, which measures alpha, volatility and consistency of returns over the past three years, is three crowns out of possible five. The Allianz fund has not been rated yet.
Ng likes both funds, citing their good performance and the experience of the managers of both teams.
“It will be a close call for me,” he said. However, if he were to choose one, he would pick the Fidelity fund.
“The Fidelity team has a much longer track record in Asia fixed income and so does the fund itself,” he said. “For the Allianz fund, I would like to see how they could perform in different market conditions going forward.”
However, Ng noted that that the Fidelity fund has grown very large, with assets reaching around $4.5bn.
“It is something investors should monitor as it may potentially pose a liquidity problem,” he said. “But the issuance of the Asia market has been growing rapidly, so if the AUM growth matches market growth, then I don’t think there is an issue.”
