About the event

What a difference a few months can make. The overall mood has lifted considerably since October, thanks to China’s reopening, an easing energy crisis in Europe and the prospect of recession in the US receding.

In Thailand, the outlook remains bright as the country navigates a return to normality following previous Covid-related restrictions, which took its toll on the all-important tourism sector.

On a multi-year view, household wealth continues to follow economic growth on an upward trajectory. According to one study, the country’s median household wealth has quadrupled in US dollar terms in the past two decades.

Meanwhile, Thailand’s wealth management industry grows stronger as more and more wealth is being managed onshore and the country’s regulators take a more accommodative approach, whether it is through initiatives like FundConnext or liberalising rules around foreign exchange controls.

But anyone expecting things to be plain sailing from here on will likely face a reality check. Indeed, the last few weeks have taught us that much as equities and bonds have sold off again due to sticky inflation in the US and the prospect of interest rates remaining higher for longer.

Against a backdrop of continued volatility, there is an urgent need for investors to find new routes to reliable and diversified returns. This event will explore how to adapt asset allocation strategies and implement new approaches to manage portfolios in today’s new environment.

We hope today’s event will provide an enlightening and informative experience. We thank you for your continued support and encourage you to make the most out of the event by asking questions and networking with your peers. We also welcome your feedback.

9:40amPresentation: Countering inflation and private property declines with listed real estate
Global real estate investment trusts (Reits) have been trading at a discount, harking back to levels only seen during the global financial crisis. This has resulted in a rare arbitrage opportunity for public Reits. Tim Gibson, explains why listed property is attractive now given the valuation differential will eventually dissipate.
Tim Gibson, Co-head of global property equities
10:05amPresentation: What are the contrarian opportunities in Asia ex Japan?
For the past two years we identified key risks involved in investing in China including tensions with the US, zero-covid, deleveraging the property market and “common prosperity”. We argued the cheap valuations on offer more than prices them in. Over the last quarter almost all of these risks have fallen – many sharply, but stock markets have re-rated. The question is what to do now?
James Cook, investment director, emerging markets & head of investment specialist
10:30amPresentation: How to identify opportunities in China that will benefit from both near-term reopening tailwinds and long-term growth prospects?
Reopening is a powerful catalyst for Chinese equities but he recent rally has bee concentrated on direct reopening plays. We believe looking beyond the well-understood names will be key to identify future winners where change and durability of growth are yet to be fully appreciated by the market.
Agnes Ng, vice president, equity division
