Baillie Gifford has created a dedicated China equities investment team.

The team will be headed by investment manager Linda Lin, who will work alongside Sophie Earnshaw and John MacDougall in the firm’s Edinburgh office.

Lin joined the firm in 2014 and became a partner in 2022. She was head of the investment team in Baillie Gifford’s Shanghai office from 2019.

The team will also consist of managers Rio Tu, Louise Lin, Tony Wang, Freddy Zhu, Clark Ren, Doris Gu and ESG analyst Lin Qin, all of whom will be based in Shanghai.

As part of the changes, fund managers Mike Gush and Roddy Snell will relinquish their roles on Baillie Gifford’s China specific funds to focus on Asia Pacific and emerging market strategies.

James Budden, Baillie Gifford marketing and distribution director said: “Investors are struck by fear or fear of missing out when it comes to investing in China. Purely focusing on China’s risks could find investors missing out on growth opportunities.

“The Chinese government is back to supporting private enterprise in a bid to achieve promised prosperity. Despite geopolitical tensions China is the home of world beating growth companies pioneering many disruptive trends of the future.”
