ASEAN the focus of new Matthews Asia hire

Matthews Asia appointed Sriyan Pietersz to the newly-created role of investment strategist, covering the ASEAN and frontier markets.

Pietersz will be based in San Francisco.

He will be a member of the investment team and have responsibility for developing research focused on economic and political developments within ASEAN and frontier markets in Asia, the US investment manager said in the statement.

Pietersz joined after 11 years at JP Morgan Investment Bank, where he was the managing director and previously the head of ASEAN and frontier markets equity research as well as head of ASEAN equity distribution.

During that time, he was responsible for formulating country equity investment strategy for Thailand and Vietnam, regional Southeast Asia asset allocation and a macro strategy for Asian frontier markets.

CEO William Hackett the appointment came in time when “we continue to see the region’s equity markets develop and new frontier markets begin to open to investors”.

Matthews Asia has $25.9bn of assets under management as of April. It has 19 investment strategists.
